There were a healthy 310 entries at last weekend’s 2026 Danish Junior Open in Herlev and seven different nationalities on the top step of the winners’ podium.
Spain’s Oriol Salvia Ripoll added the Danish BU19 Gold-level title to the European Junior Open crown he won in Hamburg in July.
The European no.2 from Barcelona defeated Japan’s Shunsaku Kariyazono in a seesaw 11-3, 5-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-3 thriller on the Herlev glass court on Sunday.
Renske Huntelaar, also a European Junior Open winner in the summer, won the GU19 crown without dropping a game. The top seed overwhelmed Wales’ [3/4] Nia Seren Thomas 11-0, 11-1, 11-1.
With Sportwerk Hamburg and Paderborn winning the titles at the ESF European Club Championships, it was a great squash weekend for Germany as they also took home two trophies from Denmark.
European No.1 Levi Visser claimed the BU17 title by defeating second seed Gustavo Cruz of Portugal 11-4, 4-11, 14-12, 11-8. Leonie Niefer was the other German winner in the GU13, defeating Poland’s Hanna Garbarek in a marathon 3-11, 13-11, 14-12, 11-13, 11-8 scoreline.
Israel’s top seed Ofri Maliach saw off two challenges from Ukraine to take the GU17 competition, firstly [3/4] Victoria Syvoplyas in the semis then [2] Anna Tarasova 11-7, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10 in a titanic final.
Mohamed Elhaddad was the only Egyptian to travel to Herlev and the 9/16 seed went home with the glory in the BU15, conquering Poland’s Benjamin Morzyc in the final.
Eliza Hales of Wales won the GU15 final against Denmark-based Timonaliz Alarcos-Kriebisch of Papua New Guinea 11-7, 11-7, 11-6. Vitek Vizibla of Czechia completed the multi-national winners’ gallery with a 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 win over Ireland’s Harry Knox.
